Government officially takes over Damang Mine; hands over keys to Engineers and Planners
After three decades of continuous operation, Goldfields Ghana Limited has officially relinquished control of the Damang Mine, handing the keys and the environmental liabilities back to the Government of Ghana today.

In a swift and carefully choreographed transition, the state immediately passed the baton to the successful bidder, Engineers & Planners, tasking the local firm with reviving the aging asset.

The handover, which took place at a ceremony in the Damang, in the Prestea Huni Valley Municipality, marks the conclusion of Goldfields’ 30-year stewardship.

Since 1996, the South African giant has extracted millions of ounces of gold from Damang.

“This is not a distressed sale; it is a strategic transfer,” a Goldfields operations manager, Sampson Arthur said. “We leave behind infrastructure, a skilled local workforce, and a foundation for the next chapter,” he said.

For the government, the priority was speed and continuity. By awarding the bid to Engineers & Planners, a Ghanaian-owned mining and civil construction firm with a growing portfolio in the sector, the state aims to keep the mine active, protect jobs, and capture more in-country value.

“Engineers & Planners demonstrated technical competence and a clear path to returning Damang to profitability,” said a Minister for Lands and Natural Resources Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah. “Effective today, they assume full operational control.”

The company has reportedly committed to a phased redevelopment plan, focusing on cutback extensions and processing optimization. Early indications suggest a target of restarting full production within six months, while retaining the majority of the existing Goldfields-trained workforce.

Local workers and contractors, who had faced weeks of uncertainty, greeted the news with cautious optimism. “We feared a shutdown,” said one mining engineer who asked not to be named. “But with a Ghanaian operator stepping in, there is hope.”

Environmental groups, however, remain watchful. Damang has a history of acid mine drainage and tailings management challenges. Engineers & Planners has pledged to uphold international standards.

For now, the gold price remains robust, and the urgency is economic: Damang is too large an asset to idle. With Goldfields gone and a local operator in charge, Ghana is betting that indigenous mining expertise is finally ready for prime time.

For now, Engineers & Planners begins site branding and mobilization as Damang Mine transitions to Damang Gold Mines Limited, marked by the Dzata symbol.
