UWR: Over 3,000 equipment distributed to trainees under National Apprenticeship Programme
The Upper West Region has received a major boost in skills development following the distribution of over 3,000 training equipment under the government’s National Apprenticeship Programme.

Addressing a gathering of stakeholders, apprentices and master craft persons in Wa, the Upper West Regional Coordinator of the programme, Joseph Banye, described the initiative as a strategic intervention aimed at tackling youth unemployment and promoting economic empowerment among young people.

He explained that the programme, a brainchild of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government led by John Dramani Mahama, targets individuals between the ages of 15 and 35, with a focus on equipping them with employable skills.

“The program is targeting poverty, economic prosperity and equipping young people with employable skills that will bring them out of unemployment,” he said.

Banye noted that although the programme was launched internally in April 2025, training officially commenced on October 1, 2025, with the current phase focusing on the distribution of equipment to facilitate effective training.

He disclosed that the equipment, which includes tools for garment making, hairdressing, carpentry and masonry, will be distributed across the 11 Metropolitan, Municipal, and Districts of the region. He, however, cautioned that the items are strictly for use at designated training centres.

“These equipment are to aid training at the training centres, not to be sent to the various houses of individuals,” he emphasised.

Despite challenges such as delays in stipend payments to apprentices and allowances for master craft persons, the coordinator assured stakeholders of the government’s commitment to the programme’s success.

Charles Lwanga Pouzing Esq., Upper West Regional Minister described the initiative as a transformative investment in human capital.

“Today is not just about handing over tools, it is about handing over opportunity, dignity and hope,” he stated.

He said the programme is designed to complement formal education by promoting practical skills, innovation and entrepreneurship.

According to Pouzing, each district has about 10 master craft persons training approximately five apprentices each, bringing the total number of trainees to about 50 to 55 per district.

“This is not just a statistic. It is a testament to a growing movement of skills transfer, mentorship and empowerment taking root across our communities,” he added.

The Minister commended master craft persons for their role in shaping the next generation of artisans, noting that their selection was based on merit, experience and integrity.

He, however, issued a strong caution on the proper use and maintenance of the equipment.

“The equipment being handed over is a strategic national investment. Protect them. Maintain them. Use them for the intended purpose,” Pouzing advised.

The beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the government and partners for the intervention, while calling for the swift payment of their stipends.
