Berekum Chelsea winger Dominic Frimpong has tragically passed away following an armed robbery attack on the team after their Ghana Premier League match against FC Samartex.
The team was ambushed on the BibianiâGoaso road at Ahyiresu, where armed robbers blocked their bus and opened fire. Players and officials were forced to flee into nearby bushes to escape the attack.
Frimpong sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
He was just 20 years old.
The young winger had been one of the standout performers for Berekum Chelsea this season, scoring two goals in 13 league appearances.
Meanwhile, some players and officials are still unaccounted for after running into the forest to seek safety during the incident.
In a statement, the club recounted the ordeal:
âOn our way back to Berekum from Samreboi, our team bus was attacked by a group of armed robbers who blocked the road to prevent our passage.
âMasked men wielding guns and assault rifles started shooting at our bus as the driver tried to reverse. Players and staff fled into nearby bushes to take cover.
âWe are grateful to the police patrol team for their swift response, sports journalists for quickly disseminating information, the people of Ahyiresu for providing temporary shelter, and officials of Bibiani Gold Stars for their tremendous support.
âWe also appreciate all well-wishers and the President of the Ghana Football Association for his prompt response during this difficult moment.â
The incident has left the Ghana football community in mourning.
