GAC: Bono records 1,145 new HIV cases between January and May 2026
The Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC) has disclosed that Bono Region recorded 1,145 new HIV infections between January and May 2026.

The Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regional Technical Coordinator of the GAC, Ahmed Ibrahim Bambilla, said the infections were spreading rapidly among vulnerable male and female populations in the region.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani on Monday, July 13, Mr Bambilla said the Commission was distributing Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) as part of efforts to reduce the spread of HIV.

He explained that PrEP is an effective medication that helps protect people, particularly those at high risk of contracting HIV, from acquiring the virus.

Bambilla urged persons receiving PrEP to adhere to the medication regimen, while encouraging people living with HIV to take their antiretroviral drugs consistently to suppress the virus and maintain good health.

A breakdown of the figures showed that Sunyani Municipality recorded the highest number of new infections, with 222 cases, followed by Berekum Municipality with 184 cases.

Jaman South Municipality recorded 126 cases, while Wenchi Municipality registered 119 cases.

Other recorded cases included Tain District with 112 infections, Dormaa East District with 95, Dormaa Municipal with 71, Sunyani West Municipal with 65, Jaman North District with 60, Dormaa West District with 57, Berekum West District with 27, and Banda District with seven cases.

Bambilla urged the public to avoid unprotected sexual activities and encouraged everyone to get tested regularly to know their HIV status.

He added that early detection and adherence to treatment remain critical in controlling the spread of HIV and improving the quality of life of persons living with the virus.
