Police in Ghana’s Western Central Region have arrested a suspect following a violent incident at the Agona-Amenfi palace that was partly captured in a viral video.
The suspect, identified as David Gyasi, also known as "Amowee," allegedly stormed the palace wielding a cutlass and wearing a talisman-embedded smock on Friday, 29th May 2026.
According to a police press release issued on 31st May, the Chief of Agona Amenfi, Nana Kwaku Gyapong II, reported the attack to the Wassa Dominae District Police Command around 1:50 p.m. The chief stated that the suspect had attacked a man named Lord Kwaku, cutting him on the right wrist, before chasing other occupants of the palace with the weapon, causing widespread fear and panic.
Police personnel were immediately dispatched to the scene, where they found a large, agitated crowd gathered at the palace premises. Officers say the suspect refused multiple orders to surrender and continued to chase people with the cutlass. Police eventually managed to disarm and arrest him.
Both the suspect and the injured victim were taken to the Roman Catholic Hospital in Asankrangwa, where they are currently receiving treatment for their injuries.
Preliminary investigations suggest the incident occurred after a separate official function. Earlier that day, Nana Kwaku Gyapong II had presided over a sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of a new laboratory and theatre block at the Agona Amenfi health center. The victim, Lord Kwaku, had reportedly been sent to the palace to retrieve a pickaxe when he was attacked at the palace gate.
The Western Central Regional Police Command has assured the public of its commitment to maintaining law, order, and the safety of all persons in the community. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
